The impact of mental illness, or behavioral health problems, on health and
productivity in the U.S. may be far greater than has been estimated in the past.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a recent worldwide
study has found that mental disorders account for four out of 10 of the leading
causes of disability worldwide.
Other research, according to the NIMH, estimated the cost of such disorders
in the U.S. at $148 billion. This figure included indirect cost to business,
such as days lost from work, and was calculated for 1990; the last time the
bill was measured in total.
American businesses are recognizing the need to address employee behavioral
health issues. More than 45 percent of insured Americans are enrolled in some
kind of managed behavioral health program.
